A BIELER • GOTT • SCOMMES
Behind every legendary performer, you’ll find a great producer.
In the case of The SHOW, you’ll find a trio of producers, each with a string of big hits to their credit. Together, Joel Gott, Roger Scommegna and Charles Bieler are the Three Thieves, and together, they make off-the-charts wines for fans here at home and around the world.
Joel Gott loves being part of the family act
A fifth-generation winemaker, he grew up in the business, learning everything he could from his father and grandfather, both legends in California’s wine industry. Joel made his debut at a very early age, helping out in the vineyards and cellars as a little boy. It was no surprise when he became apprenticed to Mike Lee, wine master at Kenwood Vineyards in Sonoma. Joel’s first solo act as winemaker came in 1996 with an intense Zinfandel from Amador County, a show-stopping wine that garnered Joel Gott Wines critical acclaim. In 2003, Joel formed the Three Thieves with fellow wine lovers, Roger Scommegna and Charles Bieler. The trio launched Bandit wines and The Show, amongst other side projects. Joel is also exploring new frontiers with winemaker Dave Phinney, and together the duo co-produces Shatter, a French Grenache. Food is also on the bill for Joel—he and his brother revamped Taylor’s Automatic Refresher, a legendary St. Helena burger joint, and rechristened it Gott’s Roadside. Today, it’s a destination restaurant with three popular locations.
Roger Scommegna is a hit machine, turning out one chart-topping business after another
He calls himself a ‘serial entrepreneur,’ but Roger has a rare talent for spotting opportunities and giving the public what they want. He kicked off his empire with a neighborhood lawn mowing/snow shoveling business at age 11, and followed that success by opening one of greater Chicago’s first skate shops, and a multi-state chain of video arcades. These were mere opening acts for what came next. In 1993, Roger started a marketing company that ultimately became Realtor.com, one of the world’s most trafficked real estate sites. This success paved the way for Roger’s latest incarnation as winemaker and hotelier. In addition to his gig with the Three Thieves, Roger keeps the hits coming with up-start beverage companies, including Black Dot Vodka and Bite Hard Apple Cider.
Charles Bieler has always had a knack for applause
—he instinctively knows how to get an audience going, and how to climb the charts. He got his first big break from his father, who put him in charge of the family estate, Château Routas in France’s Provence region. Charles’ youth and creativity turned the winery around, and he made it his goal to sing the praises of rosé in the U.S. Today, Charles is one of the leading producers of rosé wines, turning out Bieler Père et Fils, Coteaux d’Aix en Provence, and Charles & Charles (a collaboration with Charles Smith of Washington). As part of the Three Thieves, Charles continues to keep the applause coming with The Show. Coming attractions for Charles include Sombra, an artisanal Oxacan mezcal made in partnership with Master Sommelier Richard Betts and the Gotham Project, starring New York-grown Rieslings.
